ATTENDANCE POLICY

In order to increase the likelihood of academic success, it is expected that every student attends class, on time, every day. Parents and their student(s) are jointly responsible for ensuring the student’s regular attendance at school. See SLCSD Board Policy S-4 for more information.

Excused & Unexcused Absences: Absences must be excused (by a legal guardian) within one week of the student returning to school. Teachers must give students at least one week to make-up missed work upon the student’s return. Make-up work will not be entered into PowerSchool until the absence is excused. Absences not excused within one week, must have administrator approval to be cleared. It is the responsibility of the parent to excuse and monitor attendance in PowerSchool.

Extended Absences: Absences between 5 and 10 consecutive days are considered “Extended Absences” which require an approved ‘Extended Absence Form’ for absences to be excused. The student, parent, teachers, and counselor fill out the form; it then requires administrative approval (all prior to the absence). This form serves to notify the student of required homework and advanced notification of academic repercussions. Students missing more than ten days must have administrative approval or will be subject to withdrawal from SLSPA.

STUDENTS CHECKING IN/CHECKING OUT

All students must check in at the main office if they arrive late to school. A parent or guardian may call 801-466-6700 or send in a note to excuse a tardy. If a student has missed one class period or more, a parent or guardian may come into the office to sign the student in or complete the attendance form on our website.

All students must check out in the main office if they need to leave school early. A parent or guardian should sign them out.

TARDY POLICY

L= Late, 1 second to 15 minutes after the bell

T= Tardy, 15 to 40 minutes after the bell

P= Partial, more than 40 minutes late or out of class for more than 15 minutes

A= Absent, did not attend class

E= Excused Absence, excused by guardian

EXTRACURRICULAR ELIGIBILITY POLICY

Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA for the current term with no more than one F in the previous term in order to be eligible to audition for or participate in anything extracurricular.

Students who are not on track for graduation will not be permitted to participate in extracurricular activities. Exceptions can only be approved by the SLSPA administration.

If you are absent from school during the day, for any class period or for the entire day, you are not allowed to come to rehearsal or perform in the show after school or that evening unless you have permission from SLSPA administration.

The SLSPA administration reserves the right to pull you from a cast/company/team/activity if you are failing more than one class while currently in rehearsal for an event.

VISITOR POLICY

All visitors must sign in at the main office and wear a visitor’s tag. The principal, security personnel, or principal’s designee, has the authority to exclude from the school premises any person who may cause a disruption. Unauthorized visitors will be reported to administration and appropriate action will be taken, up to and including removal from school property. Unaccompanied students not-enrolled at SLSPA may be cited for trespassing during the school day.

DRESS CODE

At Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts, we strive to create an inclusive and respectful learning environment. Our dress code policy aims to promote safety, modesty, and a focus on academics while recognizing the unique needs of performing arts students.

DISTINCTION BETWEEN COSTUME/WARDROBE & STUDENT DRESS:

Costume/Wardrobe: Performing arts students may wear specialized costumes or attire for rehearsals, performances, or designated class activities, as determined by their teachers or directors. These garments should align with the artistic requirements of the performance and be appropriate for the context.

Student Dress: Outside of specific performing arts activities, students are expected to adhere to the following guidelines.

General Guidelines for Student Dress:

  • Clothing must adequately cover undergarments, buttocks, genitals, and breasts, providing opaque coverage. Undergarments should not be visible, including bra straps.

  • Clothing should not display offensive or vulgar language, images, or symbols.

  • Garments associated with gangs, illicit drugs, or illegal substances are strictly prohibited.

  • Clothing should not pose a safety risk, such as items with spikes or other hazardous accessories.

  • Shoes must be worn at all times. Dance classes are the only exception.

DUE PROCESS AND ENFORCEMENT:

  • The dress code policy will be applied uniformly and consistently to all students.

  • Students found in violation of the dress code will be provided with due process, including a fair opportunity to address and rectify the issue.

  • Appropriate consequences, as outlined in the school's disciplinary policy, may be imposed for repeated or serious violations.

We appreciate your cooperation in upholding our dress code policy, which aims to create a positive and focused learning environment. If you have any questions or need clarification, please reach out to the school administration.

PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Any electronic devices such as: portable stereos, speakers, headsets, cellular phones, handheld systems or related technology, shall not be allowed in classrooms unless given expressed permission from the teacher. A teacher or administrator may confiscate these items if used without permission. Speakers are not allowed to be used in hallways (unless approved and supervised by a teacher/administrator) at any time and may be confiscated if seen or heard. A parent/ guardian may be required to pick up any confiscated items from the main office.

CITIZENSHIP POLICY

Citizenship is based on attendance and classroom behavior. The citizenship marks are as follows:

H = Honors

S = Satisfactory

N = Needs Improvement

U = Unsatisfactory

The default citizenship for all students is an S (satisfactory).

The criteria for each citizenship mark is as follows:

Citizenship will be entered at the midterm and final grading periods. Families will be notified about their student’s citizenship if it becomes an N or U by Advisor, Coach, or Instructor.

Eligibility for Conservatory, Performances, and Extra-Curricular activities are contingent on citizenship. Student’s with a U will be placed on probation and will work with their Advisor through restorative practices to earn a higher mark. 3 hours of work must be completed per U.

You can view your student’s citizenship grade and details online in the same place you check their grade (PowerSchool) by clicking on the citizenship letter. Please refer to each teacher’s disclosure document for specific behaviors and points that affect the citizenship grade.

Parent/Teacher Organization

SPA’s PTO is designed to work together to create and organize events, act as teacher liaisons for shows and classroom needs and work closely with SLSPA Administration and Board to ensure school/parent communication.  SPA is a performing arts school that is unlike most schools, as it provides your student with professional-level training from professional dancers, actors, musicians, and technicians all in one place without having to register at separate studios at significant expense.

As a public charter school, we are able to keep costs low and the PTO helps by conducting various fundraising efforts and coordinating parent volunteerism for monetary donations, sewing, cleaning projects, chaperoning events, costume donation, painting, and assisting with other improvements throughout our school.  As little as 2-10 hours of your time makes a big difference in the success of our school as a whole.

We are currently looking for motivated parents and guardians to participate in our PTO - if you are interested in getting involved, please us our SignUp Genius form below!

Anti-Bullying Compact

This form is signed to be signed by all students who attend SPA and other schools within the Salt Lake School District about what bullying is, and how to report it. The faculty at SPA felt the information was important and we want parents and guardians to have access to it. Please feel free to refer to it when talking to your student about the effects of bullying and how it can negatively impact a person's life at home or school. If you have any questions or need help with a bullying situation, please contact our director, Mrs. Pontious so she can help address the situation.

Student Withdrawal from SPA

Should you choose to unenroll your student from our school, then change your mind, you will have to complete the application to attend SPA again.

Once SPA has received official written notification from the legal guardian as to where and when the student will be transferred, our Registrar may then forward the student’s cumulative file with all pertinent information.

Parents/Guardians begin this process by completing our Student Withdrawal Form. Our office staff will be notified when the form is completed, and we will be in contact within two business days.
